The brand for the largest art and technology festival in the US is a true work of art.

01SJ is the largest biennial arts and technology festival in the US. Organized by ZER01, the event brings artists from all over the world to San Jose, where they showcase some of the most innovative art being produced today. Liquid was hired to develop a branding and marketing campaign that captured the avant garde spirit of the event.

The idea that ZER01 (the organization) and 01SJ (the festival) focus on blurring the lines between art and technology became the inspiration for our design solution. The "01" represents digital technology and the out of focus approach suggests the blurring of the lines between the two disciplines that results in “art on the edge”. By using similar type treatments for 01SJ and ZER01 we were able to visually connect the two identities. We also helped clarify the brand architecture by creating a set of guidelines establishing how and when each identity should be used.

The branding campaign for 01SJ included a variety of templates for marketing tools used to promote the festival. This included traditional printed materials that were sent to a select group of people on the ZER01 mailing list, as well as email blasts that reached specific audiences such as artists, the press, and the general public.

Visual style.

Liquid worked closely with ZER01 to develop a series of colorful visuals that capture the dynamic and interactive nature of the event - combining a blend of art, technology and humanity. The graphic treatments were based on an original piece of art by Shona Kitchen. Shona created a graphic visual representing San Jose as a hip and techno-centric city. Liquid added intensity to her artwork by infusing color, adjusting scale, suggesting movement and depth, and adding the human factor. The result suggests a vibrant synchronicity that reflects innovation, creativity, technology, and a sense of dynamism.

Liquid helped design virtually every item used to promote the event. This included shirts and other promotional advertising materials as well as banners and busboards designed to create awareness about the event.
