A time to celebrate design.
We are very proud that MagiaLiquid was selected to be the lead branding agency for the 2010 Chile Design Biennial - an important event that celebrates the innovative design projects created in Chile. Although the event is called a Biennial, it had been 14 years since the last time Chilean design had taken center stage in Santiago. Naturally, this was a great opportunity for us – and a great responsibility as well.
A huge space and a bigger opportunity.
We were tasked with the design of the exhibition – which took place in a former train station of impressive proportions. We made it our priority to design a solution that would exemplify our belief that the purpose of design is to change something for the better. Based on this idea, our team of architects and designers decided to design a solution that could add value to the community well after the exhibition was dismantled.
An innovative display solution that was completely re-usable.
Our team of architects and designers developed a display system using sheets of plywood that had been donated by one of the exhibition sponsors. The objective was to be able to re-use the materials for construction projects in some of the less affluent areas of Chile that had been affected by a devastating earthquake. To this extent, we devised a modular structural system based on a triangle using a specially devised metal cleat, that would not damage the plywood and enabled us to use the plywood sheets without ever cutting them.
Easy to assemble and spectacularly neutral.
The geometric rigor of the exhibit design is based on the precise repetition of a simple form. The result was an incredibly modular solution that was extremely simple to assemble, structurally sound and inherently attractive. And, it provided a neutral backdrop for the products that were being showcased. The design solution was praised as “brilliantly innovative”, but we’re particularly proud of the fact that all of the materials could be re-purposed to build homes in communities in need.
Besides designing the exhibit space, MagiaLiquid also designed a custom font for the event. We based the design of the new font on a “triangle”, therefore creating a connection between the exhibition and the graphics used for signage, literature and marketing materials.
A wonderful exhibit that was very well received.
As part of the visual style exercise we explored how the new visuals and the graphical elements could be incorporated into layouts for literature that ranges from high-level sales brochures to very functional datasheets. Again, we found that the system we had designed offered unlimited flexibility. Thanks to the new branding, external marketing agencies and Bytemobile’s internal design teams have the ability to create solutions that are creative while also being consistent.
